In the new issue of Cato Journal, I review Robert Putnam's Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis. Like Bowling Alone, Putnam's latest book is full of important observations about economic and sociological trends in the U.S. Also like Bowling Alone, Putnam curiously zeroes in on sports participation as a key indicator of progress. So, if you're not willing to join a bowling league to save America's egalitarian spirit, the least you could do is sign your kids up for after-school football.
